Guide to Ideal Timing & Activities for College Counseling by Grade

  • The following is presented as a general guide.

  • We will always refine our approach based on individual needs and interests.

  • Already missed some of these and feeling behind?  Don't worry!  We're used to working with students/families starting the college counseling process at any point and will work with you regardless of when you start.

8th Grade:

  • Middle school is not too early to start thinking about and planning for college

  • We suggest booking 2 hours with us so we can help select what courses to take freshman year of high school, start reviewing interests and concerns, help maximize extracurriculars, and advise on early steps to take for college financial planning

  • We typically spend an hour with the student & parent(s) together and a separate hour getting to know the student better

9th Grade:

  • We recommend two 1-hour touch points with us during 9th grade

  • First, we recommend booking an hour with us roughly mid-way through 9th grade in order to review academic progress, revisit interests and concerns, refine an approach to extracurriculars, start thinking about summer plans between freshman and sophomore year, and field any questions you may have - this session can be with both student and parent(s) or broken up

  • Second, we recommend booking an hour with us before selecting 10th grade classes - we'll help advise on ideal sophomore year classes, finalize summer plans, and answer any questions you may have - this session can be with both student and parent(s) or broken up

10th Grade:

  • We recommend two 1-hour touch points with us during 10th grade

  • First, we recommend booking an hour with us roughly mid-way through 10th grade in order to review academic progress, revisit interests and concerns, further refine extracurriculars, start thinking about summer plans between sophomore and junior year, and field any questions you may have - this session can be with both student and parent(s) or broken up

  • Second, we recommend booking an hour with us before selecting 11th grade classes - we'll help advise on ideal junior year classes, finalize summer plans, start refining a list of college interests, and answer any questions you may have - this session can be with both student and parent(s) or broken up

11th Grade:

  • Junior year is when college counseling really "kicks into gear"

  • We'll carefully devise an individualized plan for 11th grade counseling

  • Typical 11th grade activities include advising on college campus visits/interviews, test preparation, making plans for summer before senior year, refining a list of colleges, and engaging in more financial planning

  • The approach to 11th grade counseling can vary greatly depending on interests, etc., but plan on spending at-least a few hours with us spread over the junior year

12th Grade:

  • Senior year is where everything comes together!

  • We'll carefully devise an individualized plan for 12th grade counseling

  • Typical 12th grade activities include advising on final college campus visits/interviews, finalizing test preparation, finalizing a list of colleges, college admissions applications/essays, scholarship applications/essays, filing FAFSA, reviewing and negotiating financial aid/scholarship packages, and making final decisions on where to attend college

  • The approach to 12th grade counseling can vary greatly depending on interests, etc., but plan on spending several hours with us spread over the senior year
